Just hours before the trade deadline expired the Oakland Raiders have pulled off a trade (pending a physical) for former All-Pro Quarterback Carson Palmer. Having lost starting QB Jason Campbell to a broken collar bone for at least 6-8 weeks just this past week, the Oakland Raiders obviously felt compelled to pull off a trade for a playoff caliber QB that could lead them to the playoffs.
There’s no doubt in my mind that Carson Palmer, who turns 32 in December, is an upgrade over Jason Campbell. Palmer’s arm is just as strong but he does a better job of reading defenses and calling audibles at the line. Palmer has the experience and he throws a great deep ball which is perfect for the Raiders receivers. The question when it comes to the trade for Carson Palmer is did the Raiders give up too much to get him?
The Oakland Raiders are giving up potentially two first round draft picks for an aging Quarterback. The Raiders are giving up a first round pick in 2012 and a potential first rounder in 2013 depending on Palmer’s performance. That’s a lot to give up for a 32 year-old QB in my opinion considering that Randy Moss only fetched a mid-round draft pick only a few years ago…
The feeling is that the Raiders needed to make an outrageous offer to the Bengals owners to make the deal happen and they obviously did. It’s apparent to me that the Oakland Raiders are going “all in” with this trade for Carson Palmer.
As an Oakland Raiders fan, I’ve not seen the team look this good in quite some time. Carson Palmer will have a ton of speedy options playing QB for the Raiders. And he’s 32 years old so Carson Palmer can be the starting QB for another 3-5 years while the Raiders can start to develop their QB of the future. Pryor perhaps?
There’s absolutely no doubt that Carson Palmer is an upgrade at QB over Jason Campbell. And while Jason Campbell was starting to emerge as a legitimate staring QB in the NFL, he still wasn’t the kind of QB that could “win a game” for you by throwing the football. Campbell was always a “manage the game” kind of QB and Carson Palmer gives you more than that.
When the Oakland Raiders fall behind in a game now they have a QB that they can turn the game over to and feel comfortable doing so. With Kyle Boller as their starting QB, opposing defenses were going to stack the box and, in my opinion, the potential for an injury to Darren McFadden would have increased exponentially. With Carson Palmer, the Raiders have an extremely explosive offense with an experienced QB at the helm which could be a huge problem for opposing defenses. It’s well known the Raiders have a ton of speed at wide receiver and now they have a guy that get them the ball consistently… Can you say trouble?
Is two first round picks to much to give up for an aging QB?
The answer to that question will be answered later this year when we see how deep into the playoffs Carson Palmer can take the Oakland Raiders. Props to Raiders upper management for getting this deal done particularly since it was the first big deal made since the passing of Mr. Al Davis.
