Jamarcus Russell Reminds Me of Ryan Leaf

Here are 2 things that make me believe Jamarcus Russell should not be the #1 pick in the NFL draft:

  1. He is a raw passer and most scouts believe he will have problems completing short and intermediate passes.
  2. He has a questionable work ethic.

Look, I’m not an NFL scout but I know that a poor work ethic and an NFL Quarterback mix like oil and water…

Successful NFL quarterbacks work their asses off and spend a ton of time watching film. Quarterbacks like Ryan Leaf that think they can show up on Sundays and succeed on talent alone are usually eaten alive and end up coaching high school football.

I get that the Raiders need a Quarterback. But Jamarcus Russell is a work in progress and he may not be willing to put in the work to make himself a legitimate starting quarterback in the NFL.

The Raiders need a guy that can complete passes on 3rd down.

The Russell highlight reel from LSU is full of deep passes that took advantage of below-average defenses that couldn’t keep up with his fast receivers. If you followed Russell at all you would have noticed that he consistently struggled when he was asked to complete short “touch” passes. In the NFL, those passes get picked and get returned for touchdowns!

Jamarcus Russell is a mistake and the NFL is a league that does not tolerate mistakes!

The best quarterbacks in the league are guys that manage games and limit their number of mistakes.

Jamarcus Russell is not that kind of Quarterback and he’s a mistake for the Raiders as the 1st pick of the draft.
